Lake Fork Report 8-18-09
Mid-August otherwise known as the dog days of summer are here. August, however is a very under estimated month for fishing here on Lake Fork. The temperatures lately have been right at average or a little below most days. Much better than the 100 degree days we had in late June and early July.
Fishing for me lately has been good most mornings. Most mornings we have been catching 15-25 nice chunks by lunch on a variety of techniques. The most productive for me has been the old stand-by Texas-rigged worm. I have mostly been throwing redshad and redbug colors in either a Grandebass straight tailed worm or any kind of ribbon tail worm will work as well. If you are in the right area it doesn’t matter which worm you throw or what color. I am also doing well on a Yellow Magic and a Devil’s Horse topwater baits as well around schooling fish. There are certain spots where they are schooling and most are schooling over creek bends and shallow humps. When they come up you can usually catch a few on a topwater and then catch several more on a worm.
Crankbaits are working well to in the same areas. Most of the fish I have caught on a crank have been on a Deep Little N in any shad pattern. Most of the places I am fishing are 6-12 feet. Some of the places are certain sections of creeks and other places are little ridges, shallow roads, and little tree lines on points.
The afternoons however have been a little slower. Certain afternoons I can do well dropshoting out deep 20-30 feet and then some afternoons you just can’t seem to find them at all out deep. It just depends on the day and the amount of fishing pressure. Now is a great time to book a fall trip. The fishing is normally good and the weather is wonderful most days.
