Fishing Report: October 16 2008

Posted on Thursday, October 16, 2008 in Fishing Reports

What a great fall day it was today. Flocks of geese were flying over, a cool north wind was blowing, and the bass were biting Yellow Magic topwaters. I have been out every day this week and have been averaging 20-25 fish per day using a bunch of different patterns. Yellow Magic topwaters and Zara Spooks are working well all day long even on sunny days as long as grass is present. Texas rigged worms and wacky worms are working to.

I have also caught some nice fish this week in deep water. When I say deep I mean 30-34 feet. The best baits for these deep bass are a 1oz. tail spinner and a Carolina rigged Wave Worm finesse worm in watermelon/red.

The catfish are biting well to. Last Saturday we fished less than 4 hours and cleaned 50 catfish. The catfish were located in 22 feet of water and they were caught on chicken liver.

Crappie are biting as well but lately the guys are having trouble catching keeper size crappie but that will change as the weather cools.

Good luck and if I can be of any help call me anytime at (903)780-0680.

Fishing Report: October 1 2008

October is finally here and with this month comes cooler temperatures and hotter bass fishing.  Fishing the next couple of weeks is normally better in shallow water.  When I say shallow I mean 2-6 feet.  I will typically concentrate on shallow hydrilla and shallow creek channels.  Spinnerbaits early and on cloudy windy days is my favorite way to fish.  I prefer a 3/8oz. spinnerbait in a chartreuse/white skirt or a clear or glimmer type of skirt with double willow blades.  Weightless baits like a Wave worm Tiki Stick rigged Texas style or wacky style will also work around this shallow grass.  If you find deeper grass say 6-10 feet you might try a 1 oz. jig flipping it into the matted grass.  There is also a few schooling bass showing up from time to time so also keep a Rat-L-Trap type bait rigged up as well.  In the next few weeks when things start to cool off more there will be more fish showing up deep and I will talk about those patterns in the upcoming weeks.

As far as the crappie and catfish are concerned they are on the move too.  I catfished one morning last week and we cleaned around 30 by lunch.  Chicken livers around a creek channels in about 20 foot was best.  We also caught a few in 14 feet as well.  The crappie are showing around all the bridges you just have to try all depths till you catch a few to determine the depth.  As the water temperatures cool you may try the long points by the dam as well.
